The highly anticipated Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Manchester City came to a shocking end when a group of rowdy Fortuna supporters stormed the pitch, sparking a major security alert.
The match had been played in front of a capacity crowd at Selhurst Park, with City dominating the proceedings to take a commanding 2-0 lead early into the second half. But just as it seemed the game was going to end without much incident, chaos erupted.
Spectators were left in shock as a large group of Fortuna supporters clad in black rushed onto the pitch, disrupting play and causing widespread panic. Officials scrambled to get the situation under control, but the intruders managed to get close to the players, attacking both Palace and City defenders.
In what can only be described as a terrifying scene, players were seen scrambling for cover as the attackers continued their rampage, throwing objects and even starting a fire.
The police finally arrived on the scene, but not before several players were seriously injured. Crystal Palace defender, Tyrone Mings, was left with a broken leg, while City’s Kevin De Bruyne suffered a concussion and was rushed to hospital.
Speaking after the event, Palace’s manager, Roy Hodgson, expressed his shock at what had unfolded, saying: „I’ve never seen anything like this. It was a complete disgrace and I can’t believe this happened here in England.“
The Premier League issued a statement condemning the attack, saying: „We are appalled by the events that took place at Selhurst Park today. The safety and well-being of players and fans is our utmost priority and we will be working closely with the authorities to ensure this never happens again.“
The Fortuna fans responsible for the attack are yet to be identified, but investigations are underway to ascertain their motives and bring them to justice.
This is a developing story and we’ll bring you further updates as they emerge.
